Can You Make Decaf Espresso?

Espresso is a type of coffee that is brewed by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee beans under high pressure. Espresso is known for its rich flavor, thick crema, and high caffeine content. But what if you want to enjoy the taste of espresso without the caffeine? Can you make decaf espresso?

The answer is yes, you can make decaf espresso using decaf coffee beans. Decaf coffee beans are coffee beans that have been processed to remove most of the caffeine from them. There are different methods of decaffeination, such as Swiss Water Process, ethyl acetate, or supercritical carbon dioxide extraction See my post who made decaf coffee for more details about the process. These methods vary in their effectiveness, cost, and impact on the flavor and aroma of the beans.

To make decaf espresso, you will need:

  • An espresso machine
  • Decaf coffee beans or pre-ground decaf coffee
  • A grinder (if using whole beans)
  • A tamper
  • A portafilter
  • A cup or a carafe

The steps are:

I love the Breville Touch Espresso Machine. So if you like or even need a espresso maker check out my Breville Touch Espresso Machine Review here. I like the color and the grinder. But most important, the end result – the espresso.

  • Grind your decaf coffee beans to a fine consistency, or use pre-ground decaf coffee. You will need about 7 to 9 grams of coffee per single shot of espresso, or 14 to 18 grams per double shot.
  • Place the portafilter on the scale and tare it. Add the desired amount of coffee grounds to the portafilter and level them with your finger or a spoon.
  • Tamp the grounds firmly and evenly with the tamper. The surface of the grounds should be smooth and level with the rim of the portafilter.
  • Attach the portafilter to the group head of the espresso machine and lock it in place.
  • Place a cup or a carafe under the spout of the portafilter and turn on the machine. The water should start flowing through the grounds after a few seconds.
  • Watch the flow of the espresso. It should be dark at first, then turn into a golden brown stream with a thick layer of crema on top. A single shot of espresso should take about 20 to 30 seconds to brew, while a double shot should take about 25 to 35 seconds.
  • Turn off the machine when you have reached your desired volume of espresso. A single shot should be about 1 ounce (30 ml), while a double shot should be about 2 ounces (60 ml).
  • Enjoy your decaf espresso as it is or use it to make other decaf espresso drinks, such as cappuccino, latte, mocha, or macchiato.

How to Brew Decaf Coffee – a few extra tips

Here are some tips to help you brew better-tasting decaf coffee:

  • Choose high-quality decaf coffee beans that have been processed using natural methods, such as Swiss Water Process, that preserve more of the flavor and aroma of the original beans.
  • Use fresh decaf coffee beans or pre-ground decaf coffee that has been stored in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture.
  • Use filtered water that is not too hard or too soft, as this can affect the flavor and extraction of your decaf coffee.
  • Use the right amount of decaf coffee grounds and water for your preferred brewing method and strength. You can use a scale or a measuring spoon to measure your ingredients accurately. You can for example try this coffee water ratio calculator.
  • Use the right temperature of water for your brewing method. Generally, hotter water extracts more flavor and caffeine from the beans, while cooler water extracts less. For most methods, you want to use water that is between 175°F (80°C) and 205°F (96°C).
  • Use the right brewing time for your method. Generally, longer brewing times extract more flavor and caffeine from the beans, while shorter brewing times extract less. For most methods, you want to brew your decaf coffee for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Experiment with different decaf coffee beans, brewing methods, and variables to find your ideal decaf coffee recipe.

Decaf coffee is coffee that has been processed to remove most of the caffeine from the beans. Decaf coffee can be brewed using the same methods as regular coffee, such as drip, French press, or Aeropress.

Does decaf coffee have caffeine?

Decaf coffee is not completely caffeine-free. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, for a coffee to be marketed as “decaffeinated,” it must have had at least 97 percent of its original caffeine removed. That means decaf coffee can still contain up to 3 percent of its original caffeine content, which can vary depending on the type and amount of coffee.

How much caffeine does decaf coffee have?

The amount of caffeine in decaf coffee depends on several factors, such as the type of beans, the method of decaffeination, the brewing method, and the serving size. As a general rule, decaf coffee has about 2 to 15 milligrams of caffeine per 8-ounce cup, compared to about 95 milligrams in regular coffee.

What are the benefits of decaf coffee?

Decaf coffee has many of the same benefits as regular coffee, such as antioxidants, polyphenols, and minerals that can protect against various diseases and improve metabolism, mood, and brain function. Decaf coffee can also be a good option for people who want to enjoy the taste of coffee without the side effects of caffeine, such as jitteriness, anxiety, insomnia, or heartburn.

What are the drawbacks of decaf coffee?

Decaf coffee can also have some drawbacks, such as losing some of the flavor and aroma of regular coffee due to the decaffeination process. Some people may also be sensitive to the solvents used in some methods of decaffeination, which can cause headaches, nausea, or skin irritation. Decaf coffee can also still affect some people’s sleep quality or blood pressure if consumed in large amounts or late in the day.

Is decaf coffee more expensive?

Decaf coffee is usually more expensive than regular coffee because it requires more resources and processes to remove the caffeine. The price difference may depend on the type and quality of the coffee, as well as the decaffeination method used. Some online sources suggest that decaf coffee can be around 10% to 40% more expensive than regular coffee, depending on the form and brand of the coffee.
